• Interpretation – A sense of the meaning, implication, or effect of the piece
• Judgment – Evaluating the successes and shortcomings of the piece
I did this exercise with a guy of the name Jia Yong.
But I guess there may be variation between our work?
I added more than what we've discussed in class (we are only given 5minutes!)
And I do not have the picture.
So just imagine yeah?
So here we go....
The picture is obviously showing one of the characters of Avatar (2009). If you're wondering what is Avatar, it is 2009 American epic science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron, who is also the director of Titanic (1997). About two-third of the image of occupied by the avatar. The creator of the image uses forest, or elements of a tropical rainforest as the primarily background. Both Jia Yong and I agree that the avator image looks kind of strange as the colour tone is noticeably different between the face and the body even thought it is generally in blue at first look. The colour from the forehead all the way to the neck is in a much duller blue than the shoulders. It also seems like the avatar is slightly dis-pixelated, especially the upper portion of the image. Like any other human beings, the avatar has normal looking black middle-length hair, and four main features of a face; a pair of eyes, a nose, a mouth, and lastly a pair of ears. In addition, the avatar has human-like cheeks and chin. Therefore, both of us conclude that it is a photoshopped image of a person with animal-like qualities and features. Who do we say so? This is because the ears of the avatar look somewhat like those of cats. Pointed ears with pink patches at the middle. The avatar also has broad and muscular similar to what cheetahs have.
The image is out to create connection and relation to us, the viewers or readers of the tropical region. This is achieved through featuring an image that looks like a person, showing a familiar or common environment, and stimulate images of animals which we see in daily life or are unique (Cheetahs are unique in its speed). There is minimum formality and usage of captions. As such, the image is presented to the viewers in a way to make us feel connected, compassionate, and sense of belonging to the message that is conveyed through the image. The image is there to establish a relationship with the people.
Through the image, the creator hopes to convey important environmental message to the people. How human beings are born close to the nature and everything we own comes is part of the nature. With the avatar covering two-third of the entire image, the creator is perhaps trying to remind the people that we are getting more self-centred and neglecting the valuable priceless things around us. The Mcdonalds logo at the top right hand corner of the image serves to suggest to us the potential harm globalisation can bring to the sustainability of our environment. The imperfect look of the avtar may mean that human beings are imperfect and we ought to drop the mindset that we are the superior and can do anything we want to things around us (environment and animals).
Despite having a rough idea of the implication of the image, I would say that the piece is still far from being successful. It is hard to form the exact right interpretation the message without the help of captions. Captions bring about confirmation of the interpretation. Furthermore, the avatar image is too similar to that of the one in the movie. As the movie is shown less than one year ago, it is highly likely for people to immediately relate the image to the movie. Hence, the image can turn out to be unreal and commercialised in the eyes of the viewers. Moreover, the Mcdonalds logo may be ineffective in helping to bring the idea on globalisation across. Some people may mistake it for an advertisment of Mcdonalds.
